The University of East Anglia (UEA) is hosting a programme of webinars for teachers as part of the Enhancing Teacher Agency with Technology project funded by the Economic and Social Research Council. It is brought to you by the School of Education and Lifelong Learning and School of Computing Sciences.

Join us for a fascinating webinar from Dr Sue Sentance about the Exploring Physical Computing in School (EPICS) study from Raspberry Pi Computing Education Centre.

27 March 2025, 15:45-16:30.

Physical computing involves combining software and hardware to build concrete and tangible physical systems that sense and respond to the real world; it is becoming more prevalent in schools (primary and secondary) with the development of new low-cost devices.  Exploring Physical Computing in School (EPICS) aims to investigate how engagement with physical computing—for example, using the BBC micro:bit—can support the development of pupils’ interests and attitudes.

It’s a five-year, UK-wide, longitudinal project following children from age 8-9 through to 13-14. The research also seeks to find out how primary school teachers experience physical computing in the classroom.

In this talk, Jessie Durk and Sue Sentance will describe the EPICS project and how they are working with our partner schools. They will be able to share some early findings around how the children are engaging with physical computing from the first year of data collection.

This webinar is ideal for teachers, educators, researchers, curriculum designers, teacher educators and anyone interested in the intersection of computing education and pedagogy.
